THE GREAT LAKE ALQUEVA
The Great Lake of Alqueva is the largest artificial lake in Southern Europe with a reservoir of 250 km2 (of which 69 km2 are in Spain) and a perimeter of 1,160 kms. It resulted from the construction of the Alqueva Dam, an arch dam that impounds the river Guadiana, on the border of Beja and Évora districts. The dam, that takes its name from the town of Alqueva to its right bank, was completed in 2002 and its reservoir was full in 2010.
The conformation of the region, with its gentle rolling hills, together with the very low population density make the Alqueva Lake a very peculiar environment. You can encounter everywhere hidden unspoiled water surfaces surrounded by olive trees, oak and cork trees, and speckled by free grazing animals (sheep, cows and horses) and a big variety of birds.
The Great Lake of Alqueva is the perfect place for outdoors activities and water sports. Here are some suggestions on how to enjoy at the best this unique environment.
